Lucy mentioned the nursing home run by nuns that she visited in France... while my mom was telling me how lonely my aunt is even tho she has lots of kids, grandkids and great grand kids... AND they are a really nice close and religious family... but for some reason all the kids and grandkids are so busy they don't call or visit her... was thinking about that in an Amish context... the kids are all busy working full time... and so are the older grandkids... all went to college or have good jobs... I think the grandkids should take more time to call and visit... they all could call more... maybe that is the amazing thing... the lack of phone calls...
I wonder what recent studies have been done on families... I could envision pie charts and bar graphs explaining family behavior and time series data showing how things have changed...
maybe with a global economy, we have more global families... and the geographical dispersion has led to less close knit families...
AND, it is probably also about food... I remember going to grandparents house to eat more as a kid... now people go out for fast food instead of family food...
fast food has replaced Grandmother's food...
but with any answer, I assume culture changes when technology changes... human beings and human behavior change as technology changes...
